বাঙালির বংশ পদবীর ইতিহাস খুব বেশি প্রাচীন নয়। মধ্যযুগে সামন্তবাদী সমাজ ব্যবস্থার ফলে পরবর্তীতে বৃটিশ আমলে চিরস্থায়ী বন্দোবস্তের সমান্তরালে বাঙালির পদবীর বিকাশ ঘটেছে বলে মনে করা হয়। অধিকাংশ ব্যক্তি নামের শেষে একটি পদবী নামক পুচ্ছ যুক্ত হয়ে আছে। যেমন উপাধি, উপনাম কিংবা বংশসূচক নামকে সাধারণ ভাবে পদবী বলা হয়। বাঙালির জমি- জমা বিষয় সংক্রান্ত কিছু পদবী যেমন- হালদার, মজুমদার, তালুকদার, পোদ্দার, সরদার, প্রামাণিক, হাজরা, হাজারী, মন্ডল, মোড়ল, মল্লিক, সরকার, বিশ্বাস ইত্যাদি বংশ পদবীর রয়েছে হিন্দু -মুসলমান নির্বিশেষে সকল সম্প্রদায়ের একান্ত রূপ। বাঙালি মুসলমানের শিক্ষক পেশার পদবী হলো-খন্দকার, আকন্দ, নিয়াজী ইত্যাদি। আর বাঙালি হিন্দুর শিক্ষক পদবী হচ্ছে দ্বিবেদী, ত্রিবেদী, চর্তুবেদী ইত্যাদি।The history of Bengali dynasty is not very ancient.
